Art of Another Kind

Art of AnOther Kind: International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, 1949–1960.

Produced in conjunction with an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum. Pioneering artists in the 1950s embraced artistic freedom, gestural styles, nontraditional materials, and counter-cultural references in the early years of the Cold War. French art critic Michel Tapié enthusiastically declared the existence of un art autre (art of another kind)—a radical break with all conventional notions of order and composition toward something wholly “other.” Several graphic elements, including the script font, are a direct reference of the Guggenheim’s original ephemera of the time, designed by Herbert Bayer.
