Radical Seafaring

Produced in conjunction with an exhibition presented at the Parrish Art Museum, this book connects contemporary creative explorations at sea with works by land, environmental, and conceptual artists, among them, Atelier Van Lieshout, Ant Farm, Chris Burden, Michael Combs, Mark Dion, Buckminster Fuller, Marie Lorenz, Robert Smithson, Simon Starling, and Swoon. Featured projects tackle subjects as diverse as freedom from the law of the land, Utopian impulses, and seaborne laboratories and studios.

Elements of bodies of water established the parameters for the design: water’s horizon line in the trim size and design text grid; transparency in the clear acetate jacket; reflection in the cover’s silver paper; smoothness in the high gloss paper stock; blue hues in the accent color throughout. The book title treatment, using italicized font except for the letters “A” are a bow to the wind and sails on the ocean. The reproduction of the cover image on acetate is created a haunting, ghost-like reference to the artist who died at sea soon after that image was taken.

Published by the Parrish Art Museum and Prestel • DelMonico, 2016, 152 pages, hardbound, silver paper on board with plastic jacket, 127 illustrations, 26.7 × 26.7 cm
