Picturing America: Photorealism in the 1970s

Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, this catalogue embodies the strong, iconic graphic style of the ’70s, as typified by the use of the classic Helvetica font and lower-case initial letters in the title and subtitle. The bold, hopeful urbanism and frequent depiction of streamlined machined surfaces seen in the photorealism of the period is reflected in the design of the book, with is its direct, plain, nearly automotive fields of color and blocky, literal layout, with clean, well-defined boundaries for the images, text, and section dividers. English and German text are presented with equal prominence throughout the book.

Published by Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, 176 pages, 22.7 × 25 cm
