Dieter Appelt

Seduced by the image of a place and inspired by the changing nuances of a mysterious light, Dieter Appelt first observed in 1984, the strange and secluded attic that is the subject of Bethanien. The encounter is documented by means of an installed camera and is arranged in a horizontal tableau of 26 time exposures: each station is a one day’s protocol, each position an interval within a cycle.  (excerpted from the catalogue’s essay “Monuments of Time” by Ursula Frohne)

Essay by Ursula Frohne, edited by Eleanor Barefoot and Gerd Sander. Published and exhibited by Sander Gallery, Inc
